Fashion Week: Haute Couture

Last week lead design houses headed to Paris for haute couture fashion week. Held biannually, it is an opportunity for designers to showcase their looks for the commencing season, in this case Spring/ Summer 2018. From the simplicity of Dior to the extravagance of Valentino, below I have put together a very quick overview of the past week.

Christian Dior

“Surrealism speaks about dreams and the unconscious, and often about women’s bodies. It’s very close to fashion.”- Maria Grazie Chuiri.

In a collaboration with British milliner Stephen Jones, Dior showcased a collection that was a blend of modern art and high fashion. There was also a subtle focus on politics as Maria Grazie Chuiri aimed to empower women through this collection.

Channel

Chanel’s show remained classic in all aspects. Set in a classic French garden, the show featured their famous tweed suit and chiffon dresses.

Givenchy

“I wanted to use the strength of tailoring, but in a feminine way” – Clare Waight Keller.

Givenchy’s collection for is reflective of “structure and graphism” used in traditional Givenchy womenswear. Unlike Dior’s collection, Waight Keller denied current politics had influenced the powerful design of the dresses.

Valentino

Valentino’s collection showcased the extravagant and colourful. With over the top headpieces, and not only dresses but trousers, Valentino’s show was definitely a stand out one from haute couture week.
